AEW’s Wardlow spoke about the influential role Cody Rhodes has played in his life and says that Cody is one of the few people he trusts.
Wardlow has seen his fair share of change in the past year, particularly as he’s stepped out of the shadow of his former employer MJF and is proving that he’s a force to be reckoned with on his own. MJF and Wardlow are set to face off at this year’s edition of Double or Nothing in Las Vegas, NV on May 29th.
However, another big change to affect the AEW landscape was the departure of former EVP Cody Rhodes from the company last February. Speaking exclusively to Inside the Ropes’ own Kenny McIntosh, Wardlow opened up about the influence Cody had on his career and how he helped him get started in AEW.
“You know, Cody is going to be mentioned. I’m going to be mentioning Cody until the day I die. And that’s just what it is. We’re married, whether we like it or not, simply for the fact that he was a very big part of me getting my foot in the door and obviously that first match, you know, that was all him, you know, he brought me in and he said, I’ll work with you. I’ll just I’ll never be able to thank him enough, you know.”
Wardlow continued, praising Cody Rhodes for not only being influential on his career, but also for being one of the people who’s trustworthy when it comes to real life advice.
“And then behind the scenes, he was very much somebody I was extremely comfortable going to when it comes to real life stuff and real life advice and career advice. Cody was somebody, you know, kind of like a father figure and, you know, his presence is missed by myself backstage and probably a few others. Honestly, he’s somebody I’m still going to call when I need advice. You know, he’s just that guy. You know, I don’t trust many people, but I do trust him.”
Ahead of Double or Nothing, Wardlow is scheduled to go one on one with Shawn Spears on the May 25th episode of AEW Dynamite. The two will fight inside a steel cage, and MJF will serve as the special guest referee.
