WALTER vs Ilja Dragunov Temporarily Becomes Highest Rated WWE Match Ever

Ilja Dragunov delivers a chop to WALTER during the October 29th episode of NXT UK

WALTER vs Ilja Dragunov temporarily became the highest rated WWE match of all-time on Cagematch.net, dethroning Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker’s legendary battle at WrestleMania 25.

The NXT United Kingdom Championship bout was met with critical acclaim upon its airing this past Thursday. Alongside becoming the first WWE match of 2020 to be rated 5 stars by Dave Meltzer, the match quickly became the highest rated WWE match of all-time on Cagematch.

At its peak, it achieved an average rating of 9.68 to beat out Michaels vs Undertaker’s 9.64 as well as other classics like Bret Hart vs Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13 (9.61) and Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker from Badd Blood 1997 (9.57).

The legendary WrestleMania 25 match has since reclaimed its top spot, however, WALTER vs Ilja Dragunov still sits incredibly high at 4th – being beaten by CM Punk vs John Cena at Money In The Bank 2011 and Johnny Gargano vs Andrade “Cien” Almas at NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia for the 2nd and 3rd highest spots respectively.

Whilst Dragunov achieves his first-ever 5 star-rated match here, WALTER is no stranger to the accolade having two under his belt already. The first came via his match with Zack Sabre Jr. at PWG All Star Weekend 13 Night 2 in 2017 whilst his more well-known second comes from his United Kingdom Championship defence against Tyler Bate at NXT UK TakeOver: Cardiff last August, which Meltzer rated 5.25 stars.

WALTER vs Ilja Dragunov is only the tenth match that Dave Meltzer has rated 5 stars or higher in 2020. The other nine come from NJPW, AEW and UK-based promotion Revolution Pro Wrestling. Amongst them are the likes of Kazuchika Okada vs Kota Ibushi from Wrestle Kingdom 14 Night 1, Best Friends vs Santana & Ortiz from the September 16th episode of AEW Dynamite and Will Ospreay vs Zack Sabre Jr. from Revolution Pro Wrestling High Stakes.
