An insane pitch for a previous Royal Rumble that came from the mind of Vince McMahon has recently come to light.
On February 20th, a report from Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful stated that members of the WWE Women’s Division were frustrated with their booking became a major talking point online with many giving their opinions on the topic. One line in the report that caught the attention of many fans was that the frustrations were “nowhere near Royal Rumble 2022-level”, leading many to question what happened 3 years ago. Providing a follow-up, details on the bizarre pitch have since been revealed.
Vince McMahon Pitched First-Time Ever Moment For Royal Rumble
As reported by Sean Ross Sapp on Fightful Select, McMahon made the pitch “to have Ronda Rousey eliminate the entire field of the Royal Rumble.” It was also noted that McMahon was committed to this idea as Rousey was signed to a full-time schedule in 2022.
The pitch did not play out on TV as Rousey entered the Royal Rumble at number 28 and won the match 10 minutes later, securing 4 eliminations as opposed to the pitched 29. There were also many others pitching for Sasha Banks to win the match instead of Rousey.
More details on backstage frustrations were also provided with most of the cameo appearances having no plan, being instructed by McMahon to “get in and get out.” The report points out that 7 of the cameo appearances all spent around a minute in the match.
It was also noted that during this time producer TJ Wilson, who has been credited with producing a lot of the women’s matches in WWE, “walked away for a period of time” prior to the 2022 Royal Rumble, with one of the reasons being that the pitch was so bizarre that they had trouble coexisting. The report adds that at least 4 wrestlers pitched to make cameo appearances in the match turned it down, with at least one citing TJ Wilson’s lack of involvement as the reason.
