Vince McMahon Belittled Top Tag Team For Being “Professional Wrestlers”

Vince McMahon

A former WWE Tag Team Champion has revealed that Vince McMahon brought them back down to earth after a match commenting they were “just professional wresters.”

After taking control of the WWF in 1982, Vince McMahon was adamant that his wrestling company would stand out from all their competition. One of the ways in which he aimed to do this was to eventually remove all references to “professional wrestling” from his television shows, and sever ties with much of the traditional vernacular.

The result was the birth of “Sports Entertainment” where WWF/WWE performers are known as Superstars. This eventually led to ‘wrestling’ and ‘professional wrestlers‘ almost becoming terms to be used as insults.

Speaking in a new interview with Sports Illustrated, Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler, who appeared in WWE as The Revival, recalled one particular exchange with McMahon. Harwood revealed that after a match, the WWE Chairman once told the team that their problem was that they were “just professional wrestlers.” A comment designed to show that they weren’t his “sports entertainer’ ideal.

Harwood explained that he remembered that moment when he was recently stood in the ring at a Big Time Wrestling event where The Hitman managed FTR.

“He had his hands in his pockets, and he said to us, ‘Everyone says you’re the next great tag team. But you know what I see? The problem with you guys is you’re just professional wrestlers.’”

“That night in the ring,” Harwood continued talking about having Bret Hart in FTR’s corner recently at Big Time Wrestling. “I thought to myself, ‘Damn right, I’m a professional wrestler. I’m a great professional wrestler, and look at where my life is right now.’”

Since leaving WWE in April 2020, FTR have gone on to establish themselves as one of the world’s premiere tag teams. The pair currently stand as the Ring of Honor and AAA World Tag Team Champions.
