Jake Roberts Recalls Vince McMahon Making A Bet During Steve Austin Segment

Steve Austin on the mic

WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts has recounted a time that Vince McMahon made a bet on how often Steve Austin would say “ass” on-air and proceeded to stack the odds in his favour.

In the late 1990’s, the Attitude Era of WWE was in full swing, with edgier content and less than wholesome language becoming ever-present throughout the company’s TV shows.

The star who was at the forefront of these changes was ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, who wasn’t afraid of flipping the bird to his opponents before calling them a son of a bitch and stomping a mudhole in their ass.

Speaking on the latest edition of the DDP Snake Pit podcast, Jake Roberts was looking back on the historic career of Steve Austin when he recalled the tale of Vince McMahon making a bet with WWE Executive Director Bruce Prichard on how many times the foul-mouthed superstar would say the word ‘ass’ on screen.

“There’s Bruce Prichard sitting over there at the Gorilla position, and Steve goes and he looks at Vince and goes, ‘I bet he screws up and says ass.’ Vince said, ‘you want to bet how many times he’ll say ass?’ Prichard said, ‘he’ll say it twice.’ Vince said, ‘I bet he’ll say it more than that.’ A five-dollar bet. Austin went out there but poor Bruce didn’t know Vince walked around the curtain and grabbed Steve just as he was about to go through and said, ‘say it at least 15 times.’”

Roberts said Prichard was in shock at Austin’s liberal use of the word, while Vince McMahon acted as though he had no idea what Austin was doing.

“He [Austin] went out there and said ass every time he turned around. ‘Ass. Ass.’ Prichard’s in the back crying, ‘What the f**k. I can’t believe he’s doing that.’ Vince is, like, ‘I’m gonna break his neck. I’m gonna kill him. He’s going to get us kicked off TV.’ Prichard is like, ‘Holy s**t, Vince, don’t be that mad at him.’ Bruce didn’t want Steve to get kiboshed. Vince worked Bruce many times, that was just one.”

Steve Austin is set to return to WWE at WrestleMania 38, where he will confront Kevin Owens during a special edition of The KO Show. ‘The Texas Rattlesnake’ has promised to deliver “one last can of whoop-ass” on Owens for the derogatory remarks he has made about Texas in recent weeks.
