One WWE Hall of Famer says Vince McMahon wanted the audience to take him more seriously.
While known for his technical skills in the ring, Kurt Angle was also involved in some comedic sketches during his tenure in WWE. His comedic segments involving the likes of Edge, ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, and even him signing Shawn Michaels’ entrance song are just some of his comedic highlights.
While Angle thrived in comedy, not everyone wanted him to be so entrenched in comedic segments. Speaking on the recent Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling podcast, the WWE Hall of Famer revealed that Vince McMahon stopped him from doing more comedy on television because he wanted the fans to take him seriously as a wrestler:
“I loved the comedy. I would have kept doing it if Vince McMahon didn’t stop me. Vince wanted the fans to take me more seriously so I had to cut out my comedy, and that’s when I became ‘The Wrestling Machine’. But, I loved doing the comedy, it was a lot of fun. I couldn’t wait to come to work every week and do what I was doing. It was a blast, especially doing the skits with Stone Cold Steve Austin.”
Kurt Angle would have his last match in WWE at WrestleMania 35, where he lost to Happy Corbin. He recently made a special video appearance during Slammiversary to celebrate IMPACT Wrestling on their 20 years. Angel was released from his WWE contract due to budget cuts amidst the pandemic in 2020.
