A new report has confirmed that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon is still involved in the storyline between Pat McAfee and Austin Theory who face off at WrestleMania.
Speculation has run rampant that Vince McMahon could be set for a return to the ring at the age of 76 in a match at WrestleMania. Many believed McMahon’s appearance on The Pat McAfee Show was going to lead to a showdown between the two men on The Grandest Stage Of Them All but that is no longer the case.
Instead, SmackDown announcer Pat McAfee will go one-on-one with Austin Theory who Vince McMahon has been mentoring on Raw.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer confirmed that the WWE Chairman is very much still involved in the storyline between McAfee and Theory despite the pivot away from having McMahon actually compete:
“There was a creative change during the week in a sense in that angle that was just announced that Pat McAfee’s opponent is Austin Theory and there was the slap on SmackDown, that was a change from whatever the original plan was.”
“Vince McMahon is still in the angle, I don’t know if it’s gonna be a handicap match, I don’t know if it’s gonna be Vince in the corner of Austin Theory but getting heavily involved in the angle and everything like that. Right now Vince McMahon is the key to that match. The drawing of the match is Vince.”
“So he will be introduced at some point, at least things as were last night. Things, obviously, continually change but it was still talked about. Originally it was going to be Vince and McAfee but Austin Theory was gonna be all over the match and taking all the bumps. But now it’s ok this is what the real match is gonna be but Vince is somehow gonna have an involvement in it.”
“It’s weird because I figured Vince went on [The Pat McAfee Show] and they’d already teased it on Raw with the idea that they were gonna shoot an angle and then they didn’t shoot an angle on it. They didn’t even get heat on it in the sense that Vince and McAfee didn’t end up doing an angle. They did a straight interview basically and they didn’t tease anything.”
“[Vince] just said ‘hey you wanna be on the show?’ and that he was gonna induct The Undertaker [in the WWE Hall Of Fame]. So now they have to work out what to pounce on to get the story that they are gonna want to tell. Vince is still involved in the story in some way on that one.”
Vince McMahon discussed a wide range of topics in a rare interview with Pat McAfee with the WWE Chairman admitting that he very much enjoys physical confrontation.
