More details on the docuseries have been reported by Variety, stating that 6 episodes will make up Mr. McMahon and will be one hour in length. The official synopsis for the show is as follows:
“‘Mr. McMahon’ chronicles the rise and fall of Vince McMahon, controversial businessman and co-founder of WWE. From his transformation of the WWE from a small, regional business into a global entertainment powerhouse to the explosive sexual misconduct allegations that led to his eventual resignation, this six-episode series offers a deep dive into McMahon’s life and his enduring franchise.
Culled from over 200 hours of interviews with McMahon himself (prior to his resignation), his family members, business associates and some of the most iconic names in wrestling history, as well as the journalists who uncovered McMahon’s allegations — filmmaker Chris Smith (‘Tiger King’) and executive producer Bill Simmons (’30 for 30′) present an unflinching, no-holds-barred look at one of the most enigmatic figures in sports entertainment.”
Executive producer Chris Smith said the following regarding the project:
“The goal behind ‘Mr. McMahon’ was to pull back the curtain and reveal the true Vince McMahon, obscured beneath the persona he presented to the world. Over the four years of production, the story evolved in truly shocking ways, culminating in some extremely harrowing allegations. The final product is a revealing documentary that we believe offers a rich and nuanced portrait of the man and the complex legacy he left behind.”
It should also be noted that the docuseries graphic and synopsis have been added to the Netflix app in the UK and has an age rating of 18.
Vince McMahon Docuseries Is Official
Back in October 2020, a Q3 earnings call for WWE first announced that a docuseries focusing on Vince McMahon was coming to Netflix. When it was first announced, fans were curious as to what the series would entail given that a behind-the-scenes look at McMahon was unprecedented at this point but were also sceptical as to how much new information would be revealed given McMahon’s notorious nature to have control over everything. However, in the 4 years that followed the original announcement, the entire wrestling landscape was changed in a way that no one could have predicted.
Following McMahon’s first resignation as Chairman of the Board in July 2022 following allegations of hush money payments and NDAs, the former Chairman made his way back into the company in January 2023 to facilitate a sale of the company, which was announced as merging with the UFC and under Endeavor ownership the day after WrestleMania 39. The historic sale marked the first time in company history that a McMahon was not in charge of WWE.
On January 23rd 2024, WWE Raw was announced as moving to Netflix in early 2025 and would be the exclusive home of the flagship show in many international markets moving forward. During this time, the status of the docuseries remained undetermined.
Three days after the Netflix announcement, Vince McMahon resigned from WWE for a second time following allegations of sexual misconduct and trafficking from former employee Janel Grant. The lawsuit is still ongoing but has been placed in an order of stay until December 2024.
In an update by Brandon Thurston, Janel Grant will not feature in the upcoming project, but was approached:
“Neither Janel Grant nor her representatives were interviewed for the “Mr. McMahon” Netflix documentary”
