Veteran wrestling star Konnan has revealed that Vince McMahon once asked Rey Mysterio if he “had a cocaine problem”.
Konnan is a veteran of the squared circle with a career spanning over 30 years. While he has spent much of his time in Mexican promotion AAA, he also had memorable stints in WCW, where he was a United States Champion and TNA – now IMPACT Wrestling – where he formed the famed LAX stable and is still involved as a member of the creative team.
Despite only wrestling for WWE for a brief time in the early 1990’s, the Mexican star became a point of contact for Vince McMahon when the former WWE Chairman was looking to put a Latin show together.
Speaking on the latest edition of his Keepin’ It 100 podcast, Konnan explained that he met McMahon about the idea, but there was only one problem, for reasons unknown, McMahon thought he had a cocaine problem.
“Now, let me tell you what happened when I did talk to him [Vince McMahon], and I will tell you what he did tell me. Okay, so basically, he wanted to do a Latin show.
It was me, him, Rey Mysterio, and Bruce Prichard. The main thing was like, for some f***ing reason, the guy thought I was on cocaine.”
“He asked Bruce, and he asked Rey if I still had a cocaine problem. They said, that motherf***er doesn’t do cocaine; he smokes weed.”
The idea ultimately did not go ahead as Konnan says that, while he was happy to work with WWE, he refused to leave AAA.
“The other thing was, he was like, ‘What’s your relationship with AAA?’ I was like, ‘Well, it’s very good right now. I just want you to know that I am not leaving AAA under any circumstances to come to work for WWE.’
“He goes, ‘Why not?’ I said, ‘Because Vince, I don’t want you to do budget cuts or some shit and throw me out the door and I’m at 60 years old knocking on the door of AAA asking for work. I’m not going to put myself in that position.
“So I’ll work with you. I’ll help you any way you want, but I’m staying in AAA, just so you know.’ He said, ‘Well, I don’t usually work like that, but we’ll see.’ I knew right then and there it was done, but the conversation continued.”
