Don’t expect to see ROH Tag Team Champions The Briscoes in AEW anytime soon according to a new report with network executives making sure the signing won’t happen.
The Briscoes are one of the top tag teams in modern wrestling, having captured the Ring Of Honor Tag Team Championship an incredible twelve times, in addition to holding the IWGP Tag Team Championship in New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Given the unsettled nature of Ring Of Honor before AEW President Tony Khan announced he had bought the company, many expected to see The Briscoes move on to pastures new.
Now Fightful Select has reported that AEW is not a likely destination for Mark and Jay Briscoe. The interest from the company was not confirmed in the report but it was stated that a “person of influence” in WarnerMedia – the parent company of TNT and TBS which AEW programming airs on – did not want The Briscoes in the company.
The issues stem from Jay Briscoe’s homophobic Tweets made in 2013 that Briscoe apologised for at the beginning of an ROH show the week after he sent out the offensive messages.
The Briscoes and AEW tag team FTR have been involved in a war of words online for the last few months with things getting physical when Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler attacked The Briscoes at the Final Battle show in December 2021. But it remains unknown if a match between the two stand-out teams will happen and in what promotion.
According to the report, the ROH Tag Team Champion’s status in Ring Of Honor following Tony Khan’s purchase of the company is also unknown but the team were originally scheduled to wrestle at April’s ROH Supercard show.
