The landscape of WWE has undergone a number of changes in recent months, starting with the shocking announcement last July that Vince McMahon was retiring from the company amidst an investigation into alleged sexual misconduct and hush money payments. Stephanie McMahon and Nick Khan were named co-CEO’s of the company in the wake of his retirement, while Triple H now serves as Chief Content Officer.
Despite those within WWE opposing his return, Vince McMahon shocked the world again when he announced on January 5th that as majority shareholder, he was electing himself back to the WWE Board of Directors along with former co-presidents Michelle Wilson and George Barrios. His return to the company was said to be in preparation to sell the company.
Days later on January 10th, Stephanie McMahon officially resigned from her position in WWE, leaving Nick Khan to serve as sole CEO of the company and abdicating her seat on the Board of Directors. Soon after news of her resignation became public, WWE announced that Vince McMahon had been unanimously elected Executive Chairman of the Board.
Though WWE insists that Triple H is still in charge of both the company’s creative direction and talent management, many have expressed concern that Vince McMahon may want to return to creative now that he’s officially back with the company.
Stephanie McMahon And Triple H Reportedly Opposed A WWE Sale
The shift in WWE’s political landscape wasn’t the only huge news on January 10th as in the late hours of the night, it was reported that a deal had been reached to sell the company to the Saudi investment fund. However, conflicting reports emerged and it appears that a deal has not been reached at this time. Numerous potential buyers are reportedly still in the running to purchase the company, including AEW President Tony Khan and his father Shahid Khan, who also own the Jacksonville Jaguars football team.
While the potential of a WWE sale has had a marked improvement on the company’s stock price, a new report from Axios reveals that both Stephanie McMahon and her husband Triple H were opposed to the idea.
“Sources told Axios that Stephanie McMahon and her husband Paul “Triple H” Levesque, the company’s chief content officer and a retired professional wrestler, had opposed a sale.”
It remains to be seen whether the upheaval in WWE will have an effect on Levesque’s job as head of creative, and Inside the Ropes will continue to report as more information becomes available.
