A new report has emerged offering an update on the status of the former RAW Tag Team Champions, the Authors of Pain.
Akam and Rezar were last seen in WWE in the early part of 2020 where they appeared as enforcers for Seth Rollins. However, Rezar suffered an injury in March which put the team on hiatus. Despite their relatively high profile roles before the break, the duo never made it back to TV, being released in September.
After being released, neither man has been seen inside a wrestling ring since.
According to Fightful Select, Authors of Pain were brought up to AEW management in 2020 but they weren’t sure if the pair would be a good fit with the company. Although, the door was left open. They were also brought up to management in New Japan Pro Wrestling, who were not interested in bringing in new talent at the time.
Fightful have since moved to update their original report, commenting that a promoter reached out to them after being told that both men had retired.
“they were informed that both men had “retired.” Rezar is 26, while Akam just turned 28. We aren’t sure if this was representatives for AOP or the men themselves.”
With a pedigree in amateur wrestling, Akam (Sunny Dhinsa) signed with WWE in 2014. While Rezar (Gzim Selmani) who was in the midst of a burgeoning MMA career put pen to paper a year later.
The pair were quickly paired together to become the Authors of Pain. The team debuted on NXT in the summer of 2016, winning the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic just a couple of months later.
The duo later won the NXT Tag Team Championships before being called up to the main roster in April 2018. The team wasted little time making an impact on RAW, winning the Tag Team Titles that November.
However, after a stop-start run through 2019 and early 2020, the pair were eventually released.
