Much of the discussion leading into WrestleMania 39 has been concerned with who will headline the opening night of the extravaganza.
While it’s a lock that the Undisputed WWE Universal Title clash between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes will close the show on April 2nd, the picture for the night before is much less certain.
The race to the top appears to be between Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley for the SmackDown Women’s Title and The Usos vs. Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens for the Undisputed Tag Team Titles. At various points, it has been reported that there have been groups within WWE pushing for both matches to take the main event spot.
In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that at least as of a few weeks ago, it was Ripley and Flair set to do the honours.
“Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley for the Smackdown women’s title – This was the planned main event as of a few weeks ago, but that decision could change. Even though Flair is the face and Ripley is part of a top heel team and sidekick to Dominik, the most hated wrestler in the promotion, the crowd reactions here will be interesting. A lot of people have expected Ripley to be cheered, because it’s a Mania crowd that likes to see new stars christened and a Ripley win over Flair would be that moment they want–a major happening.”
