Further to his recent teases on television, a new report has suggested that there could be a “big bidding war” over the services of MJF when his AEW contract expires.
In recent weeks MJF has pulled no punches when holding a microphone, taking aim at the likes of Darby Allin, Sting and CM Punk. In amongst the heated disses and searing insults, the AEW star has also set tongues wagging regarding his future.
One of the self-styled “pillars of AEW,” made allusions to “going to that place” and “starting a bidding war” when his current contract expires in 2024. This has led to increasing speculation that MJF might just cross wrestling’s great divide and sign with WWE once his deal runs out.
Speaking on a recent episode Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer suggested that there might be some truth to MJF’s recent boasts. Meltzer explained that while the star signing with WWE might be a longshot, a bidding war for his services certainly isn’t out of the question.
“I had a conversation with him [MJF] about it and I don’t think he is going anywhere. I mean, if the deal, the financial deal, was really ridiculous by WWE, but who knows what they’re thinking in 2024. They usually don’t give ridiculous deals to someone who has never, in their mind, been a big deal. I could see there being a big bidding war. It’s just a question of how high they’re willing to go. I wouldn’t say he’s locked into AEW, but all things being equal, he won’t be leaving AEW,”
After defeating Darby Allin at Full Gear, a match Allin called his favourite in AEW, MJF has become wrapped up in a heated feud with CM Punk. On the most recent episode of Dynamite, the pair attempted to verbally eviscerate the other, signally that an in-ring showdown could soon be in the offing.
