Major Update On Roman Reigns’ SummerSlam Opponent

Roman Reigns celebrates at WrestleMania 38

While Roman Reigns won’t be defending his Undisputed Universal Championship at Money In The Bank, he’s reportedly heading for a major bout at SummerSlam.

Since being crowned Undisputed Universal Champion at WrestleMania 38, Roman Reigns is yet to wrestle a singles match on WWE television. In fact, Reigns has only wrestled once in total, when he teamed with The Usos to defeat RK-Bro and Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania Backlash.

Furthermore, Roman Reigns has been working less dates in recent weeks and will continue to do so, as WWE continue to position him as the “New Brock Lesnar.”

This led to him not appearing at Hell In A Cell, and means he will miss Money In The Bank, despite being previously advertised. While a prospective match with Riddle is now also up in the air, as it was believed that the match would be happening at Money In The Bank.

The waters were muddied further on Monday Night Raw when Riddle expressed his desire to win Reigns’ title.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer has offered an update on the situation. It appears that although a match between Reigns and Riddle may happen, the Head of the Table won’t be wresting at a Premium Live Event until SummerSlam. In addition, he will be squaring off against Randy Orton at the summer spectacular.

“July 30th. He may actually wrestle on TV before that, but July 30th is his first pay-per-view championship match. He may do a television match before then. If he wrestles Riddle, it’ll be on TV. It won’t be on pay-per-view. At least that’s the plan right now. The plan is still Orton for July 30th.”

Roman Reigns has only wrestled on WWE television four times in 2022, and hasn’t wrestled a match of any kind since May 22nd, where he defeated Drew McIntyre at a live event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
