Jeff Jarrett is set to return to WWE programming at SummerSlam, but will he be sticking around after the summer spectacular?
At SummerSlam, Jeff Jarrett will return to WWE television for the first time since 2019 (Save for a cameo in January) when he serves as the special guest referee for the Undisputed Tag Team Title Match between The Usos and The Street Profits.
While Jarrett recently re-joined WWE, his role was expected to be very much backstage as he took on the title of Senior Vice President of Live Events.
This meant that Jarrett’s announced participation at SummerSlam came as a surprise to a number of fans.
It has since been reported that Jarrett’s appearance is due to his family ties to Nashville, Tennessee, where SummerSlam is being held.
Dave Meltzer has now offered some details around his involvement. In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer notes that fans shouldn’t expect to see Jarrett involved on-screen on a regular basis.
“In addition, Jeff Jarrett was announced as special referee for the Usos vs. Street Profits tag title match. The Jarrett situation involved the fact that he lives in Nashville and the Jarrett family has been involved in wrestling on television in Nashville dating back to the mid-60s, and actually earlier since Christine Jarrett worked for Nick Gulas & Roy Welch in the office long before Jerry Jarrett started as a teen idol babyface wrestler.
Jarrett works as Senior Vice President of Live Events and we were told it’s a one-time thing to help promote the show in Nashville and not the beginning of a storyline where he becomes a television character, but all decisions like that change weekly.”
It was recently announced that Jeff Jarrett will also be appearing at Starrcast V the day after SummerSlam when he teams with Jay Lethal to take on Ric Flair and Andrade El Idolo. The match is being promoted as the last of Flair’s illustrious career.
