Update On Ivelisse/Thunder Rosa Shoot On AEW Dynamite

Thunder Rosa hovers over her opponent, Ivelisse

The most recent episode of AEW Dynamite featured a bout for the NWA Women’s World Championship, where reigning champion Thunder Rosa successfully retained her title against Ivelisse. A post-match attack by Ivelisse and her tag team partner Diamante led to Rosa being saved by the woman who defeated her at AEW All Out, Hikaru Shida.

Since the match aired, numerous reports have emerged regarding the stiffness of the strikes from both women during the match, with many outlets reporting that the bout descended into a shoot fight after Ivelisse no-sold some of Rosa’s offence. Believing that this would make both herself and the NWA look bad on worldwide television, Rosa was reported to have laid in some stiff strikes before Ivelisse responded in kind.

Speaking on the September 21 edition of ITR Monday Night Live, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful confirmed that issues arose during the match between the two competitors, though he did not confirm reports of the match becoming a shoot.

Though Sapp previously confirmed that there was a lack of cooperation during the match, he elaborated in detail on the podcast, reporting that both Ivelisse and Thunder Rosa confirmed to him that the match, “didn’t go quite the way it was supposed to go”. When discussing Thunder Rosa he stated, “She didn’t want the NWA to look stupid”, whilst Ivelisse, “felt like Thunder Rosa did not follow her lead” during the match.

Sapp also noted that Rosa has “attempted to take a leadership role for some of the women”, which has been met with a mixed response as some of the talent do not feel they need someone in that position. This comes after reports that Thunder Rosa has been helping Dustin Rhodes to train some of the female talent in AEW’s women’s division.

Though he did note that it was a “rough situation”, Sapp was optimistic regarding future matches between the two competitors, stating that he does not believe Wednesday’s issues should prevent them from working together on the upcoming episode of Dynamite, where Thunder Rosa will team up with Hikaru Shida to face the team of Ivelisse and Diamante.
