Goldberg might be 56 years old and might not have wrestled in over a year, but he hasn’t given up hope of lacing up his boots once more time.
The WWE Hall of Famer last wrestled at Elimination Chamber in February 2022 where he lost to Roman Reigns as he challenged for the Universal Championship. In fact, Goldberg has only tasted victory twice since defeating Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam in 2019.
However, in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, the star claimed that WWE “owed” him a retirement as he had done a “deal with the devil.” The former World Champion also suggested that he might take matters into his own hands and hold an event in Isreal.
“You never say never, especially in wrestling, and they owe me one,” says Goldberg. “That’s all I can say. I made a deal with the devil and I did my job, and they owe me a retirement match. At the end of the day, at 56, it’s not something where I’m sitting by the phone waiting for a call. I’ve got a few ideas of how to do it on my own, possibly in Israel. So never say never.”
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer offered an update on Goldberg’s WWE contract. Meltzer explained that while there are no matches left on his deal, he remains under contract.
“The WWE doesn’t owe Goldberg anymore matches on the very lucrative deal he signed, but the time frame for the contract hasn’t expired, so he can’t work anywhere else.”
This is in opposition with reports in December which suggested that his contract with WWE had expired.
Did Goldberg Almost Sign With IMPACT Wrestling?
In the late 1990s, Goldberg emerged as one of the biggest stars in professional wrestling. This meant that when WCW was purchased by WWE in 2001 he was one of the hottest properties around. However, he didn’t sign with WWE until 2003.
During this period there were suggestions that TNA, which later became IMPACT Wrestling tried to sign the star. Speaking on a recent episode of his podcast, Jeff Jarrett revealed that Dixie Carter did meet with the star but there was nothing of substance to the rumours.
