A new report has shed further light on the shock departure of Cody Rhodes and his wife Brandi from AEW.
On February 15th, Cody and Brandi Rhodes announced that they have left AEW. The couple had been with the company since it’s inception, with Cody serving as Executive Vice President and Brandi as Chief Brand Officer.
In a statement confirming the news, AEW President Tony Khan thanked the pair for their hard work and commitment, adding that he has “immense respect and appreciation” for the stars.
Back in January it was reported that Cody Rhodes was working without a contract and was technically a free agent. The report explained that his deal with AEW had expired at the end of 2021.
A new report from Fightful Select has now offered an update on the situation, and the events leading up to the couple leaving the promotion they have called home since early 2019.
It was noted that the AEW locker room began talking about the pair leaving the company at the most recent episode of Dynamite in Atlantic City as neither were present. To that point many had been suspicious that Cody’s contract situation was merely a “work.”
However it later became clear on Friday (February 11th) that a deal would not be reached.
Sources who spoke to Rhodes over the weekend said that he downplayed the situation simply saying that he was negotiating, and that he “loved working for Tony Khan and AEW.” Cody was also said to be popular with a number of the production team, as they felt he had gone to bat for them in the past.
The report adds that despite Fightful reaching out for confirmation, they were never given official word that ‘Rhodes to the Top’ would be returning for a second season. Furthermore, those within AEW hadn’t seen any filming for the show of late.
There are hopes other AEW stars could feature in reality shows, with Darby Allin recently being filmed.
In closing, the report states that there is no word on a potential non-compete clause, and that Rhodes’ team had spoken to WWE, who were aware of today’s statement.
Rhodes’ final match came on a special Beach Break edition of Dynamite where he was defeated by Sammy Guevara in a Ladder Match to determine the Undisputed TNT Champion. Cody Rhodes leaves AEW having never won the company’s World Championship, but as the only three-time TNT Champion in the promotion’s history.
Inside The Ropes will continue to update the situation as it develops.
