Update On Johnny Gargano To AEW Rumours

Johnny Gargano

A new report has offered an update on the continuing speculation linking Johnny Gargano with a move to AEW.

Johnny Gargano hasn’t been seen in a wrestling ring since the December 7th edition of NXT 2.0 where he bid farewell to the show he had called home since 2015.

Three days after this appearance, Gargano let his WWE contract expire, making himself a free agent. Naturally this led to many fans hoping that the former NXT Champion would be following the likes of Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly to AEW.

Gargano later revealed that he had taken the decision to let his contract expire almost a year in advance, in large part to due he and his wife Candice LeRae, expecting their first baby. Quill Lewis Gargano was born on February 17th 2022.

Posting on social media a little over a week after the birth of his son, Gargano confirmed that he was taking bookings. This only further served to ramp up speculation over him potentially signing with AEW.

However, speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer suggested that fans may have to wait a little longer to see the star on in Tony Khan’s promotion. Meltzer noted that with the reported impending arrivals of Jeff Hardy and Shane Strickland, Gargano will have to wait.

“Yeah, so don’t expect him…apparently, don’t expect him in AEW in the next month or so. I know people were expecting it any week now. Jeff Hardy should be in relatively soon. Shane Strickland should be in soon. I don’t know of anybody else off the top of my head coming in just yet. I think that there will be more. That’s pretty much what’s going on there.”

Jeff Hardy has been linked with a move to AEW for a number of months after being released by WWE in December. It still remains unclear as to if and when Hardy will sign with AEW, despite him saying during a recent interview he was heading to the company. In the days after the interview, Hardy backtracked, commenting that “nothing was official.”
