Roman Reigns will defend his Universal Championship against Finn Balor at Extreme Rules on September 26th.
The announcement comes after Balor pushed Reigns all of the way on the September 3rd episode of SmackDown. Since returning to the main roster in July, Balor has been on a mission to reclaim the championship he never lost. A mission he almost completed on the most recent edition of the blue brand.
Despite being attacked by The Usos’ with the steel steps before the match even started, the former champion fought valiantly on.
The Irishman trapped Reigns in the ring apron stomping on him before following up with a huge dive. Reigns fought back getting a near fall with a Superman Punch but Balor wasn’t done. He hit a shotgun dropkick before landing the Coup de Grace.
Reigns just about managed to kick out, hitting Balor with a low blow in the process. After regaining his composure, Reigns locked in the guillotine as the referee called for the bell. But that was not all, as there were the first hints that Balor might be about to tap into his ‘Demon’ persona.
After the match with the champion heading back up the ramp, the lights flashed red with the sound of a heartbeat, reminiscent of Balor’s entrance theme as ‘The Demon.’
There’s never a dull moment in the life of Roman Reigns with Brock Lesnar heading to SmackDown in Madison Square Garden on September 10th.
Lesnar last appeared at SummerSlam where he made his return to WWE staring down the Universal Champion.
