“Underutilized” – Jim Ross On Vince McMahon’s Booking Of William Regal

William Regal NXT General Manager

Jim Ross knows the value of William Regal and so did Vince McMahon despite his potential apprehension.

The WWE Hall Of Famer was cooking up conversation on the latest episode of “Grilling JR” as he and co-host Conrad Thompson started a chat about William Regal, who Ross believes never was used to his greatest potential since joining WWE back during the Attitude Era.

“He was underutilized from the get-go. Some of that was Regal’s own fault because of the perception of his drug use. He did have, I know, drug issues. I don’t know about the alcohol. Maybe that too, I don’t know. For some reason I don’t think Vince ever truly trusted him in that era.”

Regal admittedly had his substance abuse issues during that time, but did eventually find a prominent role as a name heel on the program, which included a run as WWE commissioner. He would also become known for his odd couple pairing with Tajiri and did become the 2008 King Of The Ring, a run that did take him down a dark path personally.

William Regal A Great Influence To Many In Wrestling

Ross is quick to acknowledge how reliable and trusted Regal has become over his career, being an influence not just in AEW, but in two separate runs with NXT.

“Regal has become a strong ally of Triple H. He’s done a lot of positive things in NXT, he’s help develop a lot of talent, he’s helped sign a lot of talent.”

Regal confirmed his release from AEW on December 30, 2022 before re-signing with WWE in January. He left AEW on positive terms, expressing his gratitude to Tony Khan and the promotion for his time there.

“Yesterday was my last official day with AEW. I’d like to thank Tony Khan, Megha and all the hard working crew. Contrary to people who’ve never spoken to me or have their information from people who don’t know me or are trying to make themselves noticed, I had a lovely time working there and had a great time. Lots of talented wrestlers, and lovely people to work for. To my fellow BCC members, it was a special, albeit brief few months but it cemented our already strong friendship. To everyone there, thank you for welcoming me. Best wishes.”
