As Royal Rumble season gets into full swing, two more entrants are reportedly set for a surprise return to WWE as part of the women’s edition of the match!
According to a report from PWInsider, former WWE Superstars Cameron and Melina are both planned to return at the 2022 Royal Rumble in St. Louis, MO. There is currently no word on whether WWE plans to announce the women ahead of time or keep their returns a surprise for the audience on the night.
Cameron is best recognized to WWE fans as one half of the Funkadactyls alongside former SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi. Debuting on the main roster in 2012, the Funkadactyls were originally valets to Brodus Clay, but parted ways with him in 2013 when he turned heel. They remained a team until Cameron herself took a turn for the dark side in July of 2014, starting a feud between the two.
Both Funkadactyls were also instrumental in early seasons of Total Divas, with Naomi appearing under her real name of Trinity and Cameron going by Ariane Andrew. She also spent a tenure in NXT at her request beginning in late 2015 before being released from her WWE contract in May of 2016.
Long time viewers of Tough Enough were familiar with Ariane. Despite her short tenure on the show, she became infamous on the 2011 season when Stone Cold Steve Austin asked each contestant what their favorite match of all time was. Ariane, not yet familiar with the world of wrestling, answered that she enjoyed the Melina vs. Alicia Fox bout from SummerSlam 2010.
While Austin admonished Ariane for her response, one of the participants in that match is the other entrant that is planned to return to the WWE this year. Melina Perez is both a former WWE Women’s Champion and Diva’s Champion, first debuting on Monday Night Raw as part of a lingerie contest in 2004, but making her official debut as the manager of MNM alongside John Morrison and Joey Mercury in April of 2005.
Perez was an integral part of the Divas division until her release from WWE in January of 2011. However, she would return to the company on occasion, once serving as a referee in a 24/7 Championship segment in 2019 and also appearing at Legends Night in January of 2021.
Perez also competed regularly on the independent scene during her absences from WWE, appearing for such companies as Maryland Championship Wrestling, Stardom, and SWE. She also made an appearance alongside Johnny Mundo on Lucha Underground.
