A new report has revealed that WWE offered The IInspiration, Cassie Lee and Jessie McKay, spots in the 2022 Royal Rumble match, however, the duo, who were released from WWE last year, turned down the opportunity.
The IInspiration were part of the WWE roster for several years from 2015-2021. Then known as The IIconics and working under the ring names of Peyton Royce and Billie Kay, the two were a big part of the burgeoning women’s tag team division in the company and were only the second team to hold the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships.
The team was eventually split up in the 2020 WWE Draft, and only months later were released from the company in April 2021 as part of a slew of budget cuts being made by the company.
Following their release, the two continued to stay active. As well as trademarking their new ring names, Cassie Lee and Jessie McKay, they launched their own podcast, Off Her Chops and a new eponymously named single by Hayley Cameron. They also announced The IInspiration Tour, which involved several wrestling convention appearances.
They signed for IMPACT Wrestling in October 2021 and debuted at Bound For Glory, winning the Knockouts Tag Team Championship from The Decay, Rosemary and Havok, titles they still hold to this day.
Now, Fightful Select have reported that WWE reached out to the pair to appear in the Royal Rumble. However, they turned the offer down, saying that they didn’t think it was the right time to return to WWE, even for a one-off, as they are happy with their current path.
The report also noted that IMPACT sources said they would have signed off on the appearance if The IInspiration had opted to go through with it.
Interestingly, Fightful also says that McKay and Lee aren’t the only stars who have been released in the last two years who were contacted.
The Royal Rumble takes place on January 29th, you can find out all of the details, including how to watch, here.
