Sami Zayn shares Pat Patterson story

Following the tragic passing of the legendary Pat Patterson, who sadly passed away at the age of 79, tributes and stories have been flooding the internet from some of the biggest names in wrestling – including the likes of The Rock – but you’ll be hard-pushed to find a better one than that of current WWE Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn!

Zayn recalled the story of how he won his first championship in WWE, and how Patterson had to be there and celebrate with him – despite being told he couldn’t.

“When I won the NXT Title, Pat was so proud & so happy, he HAD to be there to celebrate with me. If you watch it now it’s so funny, all the NXT kids…and Pat Patterson. He’s the happiest one there. They told him “Pat you can’t go out there” and he said, ‘TRY AND F***ING STOP ME'”

Pat Patterson, real name Pierre Clermont, passed away at the age of 79 after a battle with cancer. Pat’s legacy will live on forever as the inaugural WWF Intercontinental Champion, the creator of the Royal Rumble, and the first ever openly gay WWE Superstar.

Inside the Ropes offers its condolences to the friends and family of Pat Patterson.
