Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez made history at NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day by becoming the first ever winner of the Women’s Dusty Classic, beating the team of Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart in the final.
As well as picking up the trophy at the end of a hard-fought contest Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez have also earned a shot at the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships.
Following their victory the pair spoke to Brandon Walker on his podcast Rasslin,’ where they described winning the tournament as “an honour.”
“We got paired a year ago and to know it’s come full circle for us and being part of the Dusty Classic is a pleasure and an honour. To win it is amazing. We both came into the [Performance Center] after Dusty had passed and we missed the opportunity of getting to interact with him but he’s an icon and someone we always looked up to. We’ve heard nothing but amazing stories from everyone at the PC and it’s a pleasure,” said Raquel. “It came off as very action-packed and that’s how we wanted to start the show. You have Ember and Shotzi and they are very strategic and smart in how they would come at us. It was very much intense the entire time. It was so intense that being able to celebrate almost became overwhelming. Definitely an adrenaline rush match and we’re very happy with it.”
Kai followed up by saying that while there is pressure on opening the show, it meant that they could set the tone for the rest of the night.
“There’s always a lot of pressure to open the show. It’s a lot of responsibility to set the pace for the whole show. I think we did that and we went out there and put on a hard-hitting slugfest to really set up the rest of TakeOver.”
After the pair finally emerged victorious and got to celebrate at the top of the ramp with the trophy, ticker tape and all, they were greeted by Triple H as they got back through the curtain. And Gonzalez revealed that The Game had some special words for the winners.
“He said something very special to us, which was ‘Dusty would be very proud to know Dakota and I were the first women to win the Dusty Classic.'”
It was something which “hit us really hard, especially after an intense match,” added Kai.
There has been no news yet on when the pair will receive their title shot, but their performance at TakeOver: Vengeance Day will have certainly made the champs sit up and take notice.
