A handful of Superstars can claim to be big star on either RAW or SmackDown, while even fewer can claim to be the biggest star in WWE. But in the eyes of Triple H, only one of those Superstars can lay a claim to being the biggest star in the entire pro wrestling industry.
Speaking after Money In The Bank with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Triple H was full of praise for Universal Champion Roman Reigns, commenting that he has “perfected his craft.”
WWE’s Executive Vice President of Global Talent Strategy & Development initially broke down the Money In The Bank main event between Reigns and Edge. The match saw a resilient Rated R Superstar refusing to quit against Reigns, before nearly claiming victory. However, Edge was denied by a late run-in from Seth Rollins, before John Cena appeared to close the show staring down Reigns.
Triple H explained that there are lots of moving parts during such a match, adding that it’s important to try and make fans forget about the rumours they may have read online.
“There are lots of moving parts in a match like that,” Triple H said. “Roman Reigns and Edge needed time for their story to play out, and you want people to invest to the point where they forget about anything else. Seth Rollins needed time to make his point. You need to allow all the moments time to breathe. The goal for everyone involved is to be so good you make people forget about everything else.
“Those rumours you might have heard about who could show up, or what may happen, our goal is to make you forget about those. Be so captivating out there that you make people focus only on you. Get everyone so caught up in the moment, and that’s what Roman, Edge and Rollins did. Then, in this case, when you’re focused entirely on what’s happening in the ring, that’s when Cena comes out.”
“If you ask John, I’m sure it felt right in the ring,” he said. “It was magic.”
Triple H continued by heaping praise on Reigns who he described as not only the biggest star in WWE but the entire industry of professional wrestling.
“Roman is the biggest star in WWE, he’s the biggest star in the industry,” he said. “He perfected his craft at a really hard time to do so with no fans. He put so much into his character work, and his reaction to Cena was as powerful as the moment itself.
“Watching that, I couldn’t help but think back to how long he’s been doing this and some of the tougher times he’s been through. Right now, he’s performing on a whole other level. He’s at the point where he is no longer thinking about the character, he just is.”
While Roman Reigns saw off the challenge of Edge at Money In The Bank, a new set of challengers are already jostling for position. John Cena appears first in the queue after he opened the most recent episode of Monday Night RAW calling out the Universal Champion for a showdown at SummerSlam. Meanwhile, the new Mr Money In The Bank Big E, also appears to have set his sights on a clash with the Tribal Chief.
