Prior to her Survivor Series return, Becky Lynch last competed inside a WWE ring at SummerSlam, where she was unsuccessful in her attempt to regain the Raw Women’s Championship against Bianca Belair. After the match, Belair was confronted by Bayley, who returned from injury after more than a year off WWE television. Bayley wasn’t alone, and had Dakota Kai and IYO SKY (formerly known as Io Shirai) in tow, forming the group that would go on to be known as Damage CTRL.
Though Bayley’s return was a boon to the WWE Raw women’s division, the SummerSlam match had disastrous consequences for Becky Lynch, who suffered a shoulder injury during the bout. Lynch confirmed her injury status the next night on Raw, and after being written off television following an attack from Damage CTRL, The Man was absent from WWE until making her return on the SmackDown before WWE Survivor Series, where it was revealed that she would compete against Damage CTRL inside WarGames.
Competing alongside Bianca Belair, Asuka, Alexa Bliss, and the recently-returned Mia Yim, Becky Lynch scored the pinfall victory for her WarGames team when she pinned Dakota Kai, who was on a team with fellow Damage CTRL members Bayley and IYO SKY as well as Nikki Cross and Rhea Ripley.
“My Hat’s Off To Becky Lynch” – Triple H
Speaking in a press conference after Survivor Series, WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H addressed Becky Lynch’s return, and revealed that The Man was initially hesistant when she heard she’d be returning in such a brutal match after suffering an injury at SummerSlam. However, she quickly embraced the opportunity, saying “let’s do this.”
“When the words ‘WarGames’ were first mentioned to Becky, as a conversation around her return, ‘What about WarGames?’ There was a moment there where I think she was like, ‘Really? Um….’ And then she put some thought into that and the phone call was, in typical Becky fashion, ‘Screw it, let’s go. Let’s do this.'”
Continuing, Triple H praised The Man for her commitment to performing as a WWE Superstar.
“To go from that level of nerves to ‘screw it let’s go,’ to the next morning I get a phone call saying ‘Becky’s thinking about jumping off the top of the cage and leg dropping through a table.’ I’m like ‘she didn’t really take her time getting comfortable with WarGames…’ The level of commitment that comes from our talent for things like that, it’s tough for people that aren’t doing this, that don’t have that level of physicality to understand. My hat’s off to Becky for stepping into this in that manner coming off that injury.”
Becky Lynch opened the November 28th episode of WWE Raw by addressing the crowd and celebrating with members of the audience before being interrupted by Bayley. Lynch ended up brawling with all three members of Damage CTRL in the arena’s concourse. Full results from the most recent episode of WWE Raw can be found here.
