Torrie Wilson On Wrestling In ‘Divas’ Era – “We Tried… It Was Hard”

Torrie Wilson has revealed that the progression of women’s wrestling brings her “to tears” – opening up about how she, and others, tried to kickstart it back in the Divas Era.

Speaking on The Bump, the WWE Hall of Famer spoke of how “cool” it is to see how far the women have come, while speaking of the difficulty of wrestling in a division where ability was secondary to raunchy storylines and sex appeal.

“It’s really cool to see how far they’ve come! We tried to make things look athletic and entertaining; it was hard. It does bring me to tears to see how far it’s come and to see women headline any show and to see them do long matches. I’m speechless, really.”

Wilson joined WWE in 2001 following a stint in WCW, and was immediately thrust into a storyline as Vince McMahon’s mistress, before debuting in a Bra and Panties Match alongside Stacy Keibler against Lita and Trish Stratus at Invasion. Wilson would compete in a Paddle on a Pole Match the very next night against Trish Stratus, before being involved in storylines that involved her stripping on the announce table, focused on her appearance in Playboy, in relationships with Tajiri, Carlito and Billie Kidman, and the infamous Stepmother vs Stepdaughter angle with Dawn Marie that saw Marie marry Wilson’s father Al in their underwear, and try to seduce Torrie herself.

The WWE Hall of Famer has since showcased her wrestling ability in today’s product, competing in Women’s Royal Rumble Matches, mixing it up with the women of today.
