Top WWE Star Took A Massive Pay Cut To Join The Company

Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn with The Bloodline Survivor Series 2022

While the financial rewards for signing with WWE can be huge, that’s not always the case, at least initially.

Sami Zayn began his career back in March 2002 and became one of the most popular stars on the independent scene appearing for the likes of PWG, Ring of Honor, Chikara, and Dragon Gate to name just a few.

However, his life and career completely changed in early 2013 when he signed with WWE. Although financially that change wasn’t immediately a good one. Appearing on Whiskey Ginger, Zayn recalled this period of his career, revealing he took a substantial pay cut to sign with WWE.

Zayn said that during his last year on the independents, he made $100,000, while his first WWE deal was for $39,000.

When I signed for WWE, I actually took a pay cut because it’s like, okay, you’re signing for WWE, it’s like the opportunity to make money, right? I think my last year on the independent [circuit], I’m throwing all these numbers out willy-nilly, but whatever. (…) So, I think my last year on the independent, I made somewhere around $100,000 and I signed my first WWE contract for $39,000.”

Sami Zayn’s Fight Against The Bloodline Continues At WWE Backlash

After establishing himself in NXT, Sami Zayn went on to win the NXT Championship and become one of the most popular stars in WWE after moving to the main roster. For the last year, Zayn has been wrapped up in a storyline with The Bloodline which saw him challenge for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title in his hometown of Montreal.

Despite not becoming World Champion, Zayn later reunited with best friend Kevin Owens to win WWE tag team gold at WrestleMania 39.

However, their pair’s issues with The Bloodline are far from over. On May 6th, the duo will team with Matt Riddle to take on The Usos and Solo Sikoa at Backlash.
