Top NJPW Star Off Forbidden Door, Replacement Named

NJPW forbidden door

Injuries ahead of Forbidden Door don’t show any signs of slowing, and one of NJPW’s representatives is now off the show.

A four way match will take place at Forbidden Door with matches featuring some of AEW’s international stars taking place to determine who qualifies for the chance to be the inaugural AEW All-Atlantic champion. One place in the match was reserved for NJPW competitors and when Tomohiro Ishii defeated Clark Connors at a recent New Japan Road show to qualify, his place in the match seemed to be set.

However, the official AEW Twitter account announced that Ishii was injured in his match against Connors and is not medically cleared to compete at Forbidden Door as a result. Connors will be taking his place in the All-Atlantic Championship match.

“Tomohiro Ishii was injured in his AEW #AllAtlantic Title NJPW Eliminator Tournament match with @ClarkConnors. With Ishii not medically cleared, he forfeits & Connors will now go to #ForbiddenDoor on Sunday to face #Miro, #PAC & @malakaiblxck to crown the 1st All-Atlantic Champion”

An update from New Japan Pro Wrestling revealed that Ishii is dealing with a left knee injury.

Both AEW and NJPW have been plagued with injuries ahead of the show, with new AEW World Champion CM Punk announcing on the June 3rd episode of Rampage that he was injured and an interim champion would be crowned in his absence.

To make matters worse, Bryan Danielson announced on the June 22nd Dynamite that he is also suffering from an undisclosed injury that will keep him away from both Forbidden Door and AEW Dynamite. He has chosen a mystery opponent for Zack Sabre, Jr. at the event, but he said that he won’t be telling who it is until the night of the pay per view.

Matt Hardy is also said to be dealing with a knee injury according to a recent report, though the severity of the damage is unknown.
