Over the past few weeks, speculation has been rife about multiple New Japan Pro Wrestling stars potentially heading to WWE or AEW.
Most focus has been on the status of former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Jay White. However, there have also reportedly been overtures made to both the man who banished the Switchblade from Japan, Hikuleo, as well as his real-life brother, Tama Tonga.
Tama Tonga confirms WWE is interested in him
WWE’s interest in the current NEVER Openweight Champion was reported by Fightful Select as far back as January 15th, and now the man himself has confirmed that they have been “knocking hard on his door”.
Speaking to Tokyo Sports about his future, Tonga first reminded the world of his accomplishments during his time in New Japan.
“I’m always the guy at the top. Look what I have accomplished in my short career in Japan. I started the best unit ever, the Bullet Club. I was ostracized. Nobody believed me. But that’s okay. All you need is yourself. All you need is to believe in yourself”
The star went on to say that he plans to become the best wrestler, whether that be in New Japan or the USA.
“I will be the best wrestler. It could be the ultimate legend of New Japan Pro Wrestling, or it could be WWE, because WWE is knocking hard on my door. And I might say, ‘Hello.'”
Tonga has been part of NJPW since 2013 and, as well as playing a key role in Bullet Club, he has been a seven-time IWGP Tag Team Champion alongside his brother Tanga Loa as well as capturing the NEVER Openweight Championship twice.
