On March 3rd 2021 the wrestling world was saddened to lose one of the most influential men in the sports history, Jim Crockett Jr. Someone who knew Crockett incredibly well was AEW announcer Tony Schiavone, who joined Jim Crockett Promotions in 1983.
Following the legendary promotors death, Tony Schiavone appeared on the Talk Is Jericho podcast to pay tribute to Crockett Jr. Schiavone explained that he was able to speak to his former boss just two days before his passing, and shared what he had said in their final conversation.
“Well unfortunately two days before he died David called me and said Jimmy wants to talk to you so he put me on speakerphone. I talked to Jimmy and told him how much his family meant to me and how much he meant to my career and honestly, I said, ‘I would be nothing without you because you’re the one that gave me my shot, gave me my chance, and so everything that I’ve done, every success that I’ve had is really because of your confidence in me.’ I know there’s a lot of other people that were on my side like Ric Flair and Dusty [Rhodes] wanted me to do well but Jimmy Crockett made the decision to let me work for them and made the decision to put me on TBS.”
In late 1988, Jim Crockett Jr. would sell his organisation [Jim Crockett Promotions] to media tycoon Ted Turner who would go on to rename the acquired organisation the Universal Wrestling Corporation before renaming it once again, this time to much more well known World Championship Wrestling – WCW.
Following Crockett Jr’s death the wrestling world paid tribute to a man who had helped shape the careers of some many people who would later go on to be legends in their own right.
We here at Inside The Ropes send our continued condolences to family, friends and fans of Jim Crockett Jr.
