AEW President Tony Khan has declared that Shaquille O’Neal is “the greatest celebrity wrestler of all time.”
The NBA legend made his AEW in-ring debut on the March 3rd episode of AEW Dynamite, where he teamed with Jade Cargill to take on Cody Rhodes and Red Velvet.
Shaquille O’Neal and Cargill eventually emerged victorious but not before Shaq was driven through two tables by Cody Rhodes. After the match Shaq was taken from the ringside area on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance. However, when the camera cut back to the ambulance, Shaq had disappeared. The NBA All-Star hasn’t been seen in AEW since.
Following the match, Rhodes praised Shaq, commenting that he took his training “very seriously.”
Speaking to Just Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Tony Khan has now reflected on Shaq’s performance, lavishing praise on the star.
“Shaq is the greatest celebrity wrestler of all time… Backstage, I’ve never seen anyone come in and be more genuine, spend more time working on the craft for months, as well as paying respect to the wrestlers. This is one of the biggest stars in the world, and he came in to help us. He gave to the wrestling business in a way that was incredible, and I’d be remiss not to mention that.”
It has also been announced that Mike Tyson is set to return to AEW Dynamite. The former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World previously appeared in AEW just under a year ago in May 2020. The former boxing star was present at AEW Double Or Nothing, before debuting on AEW Dynamite in a brawl with Chris Jericho and the Inner Circle.
Tyson’s upcoming appearance will see him enter an AEW ring in front of a live crowd for the very first time.
