Tony Khan has discussed regretting the Matt Hardy teleportation segment that aired on AEW Dynamite in 2020 in Hardy’s second appearance with the company.
Having debuted the week before, Matt Hardy would appear on the 25th of March edition of Dynamite to confront Chris Jericho. Appearing in the empty stands, Hardy would then apparently teleport making his way closer and closer to Jericho in the ring. AEW President and CEO Tony Khan has expressed his regret at airing the segment.
Speaking to Chris Jericho on the ‘Talk Is Jericho’ podcast, Khan gave his thoughts on the presentation and divulged whose idea it originally was.
“That was your idea. There’s stuff like that, those are the things I tried to do a lot less of this year, honestly. That’s a good example. There’s stuff like that where somebody had something and I knew I was skeptical going in. I talked myself into it and I wouldn’t have done it. It’s not against you or the idea, it’s just the way it was executed and the way we were talking it about, I had a feeling it wasn’t going to work.
That’s the perfect example of things. I didn’t do very many of them this year. We had many mistakes this year, but I tried to cut down on them. That’s a perfect example of where I wish we hadn’t done it but it was my fault. If I really believed it that strong, I should have stood up and said it. Your idea was good, but the way we executed it on short notice, it didn’t really look right. It was tough. We were short-handed in the pandemic and we were trying to do cool stuff. I think everybody was happy to have wrestling stuff and we don’t really do stuff like that on the show.”
Matt Hardy has shown glimpses of his supposed supernatural abilities at other times in his AEW run. Most notably during the Stadium Stampede match where, upon being submerged in a swimming pool, Hardy would re-emerge as various iterations of his character.
AEW boss Tony Khan also discussed his thoughts on Sting joining the company in a wide-ranging conversation with Jericho.
