AEW President Tony Khan has revealed that he would be open to speaking to WWE about holding a super-show alongside the sports entertainment giant.
While the Forbidden Door has become less and less forbidden over the last 18 months, WWE have kept their entrance to the mythical portal mostly bolted shut.
However, AEW have taken a completely different approach to doing business and have worked extensively with IMPACT Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling. The relationship with the latter even led to a super-show featuring the two promotions under the Forbidden Door name.
In March it was also announced that AEW boss Tony Khan had purchased Ring of Honor, with an eye to relaunching the promotion which had been on hiatus.
Despite the different philosophies, Tony Khan has now admitted that he would be open to talking to WWE about the possibility of a joint venture. Even if he’s not especially convinced that such a show would ever take place.
During an appearance on The Ringer’s Masked Man Show, Khan was wary of making bold predictions, but didn’t rule out any future talks.
“I’m not sure if that’s gonna happen [AEW and WWE doing a joint show]. But, I would be open to talking about that type of thing. It’s not crazy but it’s a bold prediction.”
The comments come after numerous AEW stars appeared in pre-taped video segments on a recent episode of Monday Night Raw celebrating the 20th anniversary of John Cena’s debut. Khan later revealed that WWE had personally reached out to him over the creating the clips, describing himself as a “good Samaritan” when asked for a “reasonable favour.”
As well as featuring AEW talents on Raw, WWE also featured Mickie James as part of the 2022 Women’s Royal Rumble match, despite her being IMPACT Knockouts Champion at the time.
