AAA promoter Konnan has hit out at both Tony Khan and AEW for being “hard to deal with”, detailing some backstage issues he’s had with the AEW President!
Speaking on a recent episode of Keepin it 100, Konnan discussed how AEW pulling talent from various AAA shows in the past led to a rift between himself and Tony Khan. He went on to recall an incident that occurred after Khan pulled Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo from AAA Nocho de Campeones 2022.
In a podcast around that time, the WCW veteran admitted to being confused as to why Melo had to be pulled from the show to replace “some chick” who had contracted COVID-19 when AEW has many other female talents on its roster.
Khan was supposedly furious at Konnan for referring to the unknown talent as “some chick” which Konnan claims he used as he knew Khan would not want the talent publicly named.
“Tony got really, really mad about this and I can’t even believe he got mad.”
“I was thinking to myself, you’ve got so many girls but you’re going to use her.. okay. And then I said on the podcast, I go ‘some chick got (COVID)’ because I’m pretty sure he didn’t want me to say the name. And when he saw me, he goes, ‘What do you mean some chick?’ Like, oh give me a break, dude. So, would you rather have had me say the name?’”
Later, Konnan claimed that AAA no longer needed its working relationship with AEW and claimed that the company, and Tony Khan by proxy, were difficult to work with. He went on to speculate about the company’s current relationship with AAA’s rival CMLL.
“We’ve been selling out everywhere. We don’t even need AEW, and they’re expensive and it’s hard to deal with them because they pull ’em out at the last minute. I see they haven’t had that problem with Arena Mexico. Whether he’s trying to stick it up… because I don’t put over his thing or he’s just having a good business relationship and it’s easier to work with them, I have no idea.”
