Tony Khan has suggested it will be “interesting to see what happens” come June and AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door II.
Khan was speaking during an interview with Adrian Hernandez to promote Doube or Northing in May. As part of the interview, Khan was asked about recent comments from the IWGP Women’s Champion where she appeared to hint that she would be open to appearing at the supershow, noting that she was “waiting on a call from unc.”
In response, Khan talked up Mone, and said it was encouraging to hear her discussing the event.
“It’s a very encouraging thing to hear. I have so much respect for Mercedes. I think she’s such a great pro wrestler and certainly one of the best in the world. Any wrestling company in the world, including AEW, is fortunate to have Mercedes. Currently, she is the world champion for our partner NJPW and I think she’s a great champion for them.
I’m glad she brought up Forbidden Door as it’s going to be an exciting event. Certainly the shadow of Mercedes is looming large in NJPW right now. When AEW and NJPW clash at Forbidden Door, it will be very interesting to see what happens. She’s certainly one of their top stars and it makes for a very interesting situation going into Forbidden Door.”
Mercedes Mone has only wrestled once in ten months, defeating KAIRI to win the IWGP Women’s Title at Battle in the Valley in February.
During the appearance at Planet Comic Con where she discussed Forbidden Door, Mone also praised rising NXT star Zoey Stark. The former Sasha Banks said that Stark is ready to shine if given the opportunity and would excel on the main roster.
