Tony Khan Has His Eyes On Released WWE Star; Major Debut Set

Tony Khan makes an announcement on AEW Dynamite

A major debut is set for AEW as a former WWE star is on President Tony Khan’s radar.

Former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Lacey Lane made a notable appearance at Ring of Honor TV tapings in Philadelphia ahead of AEW Dynamite. Formerly known as Kayden Carter, the star competed in a match at the 2300 Arena, with the bout set to air on an upcoming episode of ROH TV. Lane’s appearance at the ROH tapings signals potential interest from Tony Khan, who owns both AEW and Ring of Honor.

Lane was released from WWE in May 2025 alongside her tag team partner, Katana Chance, as part of a larger round of roster cuts. The duo had been with the company since 2018 and were former NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions and Women’s Tag Team Champions. Their release came as a surprise to many fans, considering they were recent champions and active performers on the roster.

The pair’s last televised match took place on the April 11 episode of SmackDown this year, in a Women’s Tag Team Championship #1 contender’s gauntlet match, and got eliminated by Bayley and Lyra Valkyria, who got a shot at the tag gold at WrestleMania 41.

Together with Katana Chance, she achieved significant success, holding the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship for a record-setting 186 days. After being drafted to the main roster in 2023, the duo captured the Women’s Tag Team Championship in December 2023.

Lacey Lane Talked About Her WWE Exit

During her recent appearance on Busted Open Radio, Lane addressed her WWE departure and spoke candidly about her frustrations with the company. She revealed that she felt ‘very held back’ creatively during her time in the company and believed she wasn’t able to showcase her full potential. Lane explained that despite pitching ideas and trying new approaches, she often had to go with whatever direction the company had prepared for her and her partner.

The former champion expressed that she lost her ‘spark’ during her WWE run, something that her original trainer, Bully Ray, had noticed. Lane acknowledged that the fiery persona she once had ‘got away from me’ during her time with the company. She expressed frustration about feeling like she and Chance were not among WWE’s ‘hand-chosen’ talents, regardless of their performance
