Tony Khan Took Inspiration From ECW One Night Stand For ROH Supercard Of Honor

AEW President Tony Khan

AEW President Tony Khan revealed that Supercard of Honor took inspiration from the 2005 WWE pay-per-view ECW One Night Stand!

Tony Khan announced in March that he had purchased Ring of Honor, and later revealed that he would also serve as the promotion’s booker. Speaking to Barstool Rasslin’, the AEW President revealed when booking Supercard of Honor – ROH’s first show under Tony Khan’s regime – he wanted a hot start and took inspiration from WWE’s 2005 pay-per-view ECW One Night Stand because he wanted something that felt different from an AEW show.

“I felt like I wanted to strike while the iron was hot with Ring Of Honor, not do like cold tribute matches. But on the other hand, One Night Stand is one of the greatest PPVs, because they captured the spirit of ECW, and there was a lot of exciting stuff on the show. Apples and oranges, they’re totally different shows. I thought, ‘hey, we can do a show that captures the spirit of AEW. I don’t want to do an AEW show.’ That is what was great about One Night Stand, it was not a WWE show.

Ring Of Honor Supercard was a Ring Of Honor show. With Ian and Caprice announcing, with Bobby ring announcing. Bringing in some stars from AEW, really only FTR were the only outside stars that hadn’t been primarily in Ring Of Honor. Other than, I guess, Swerve. But ironically, Ring Of Honor had booked Swerve before I did. So, Swerve was already committed to that before he had come to AEW.”

Supercard of Honor featured a surprise appearance from ROH legend Samoa Joe before it was announced that he had signed with All Elite Wrestling.

On the most recent episode of AEW Dynamite, Samoa Joe went toe to toe in a hellacious battle with Minoru Suzuki and was able to capture the Ring of Honor World TV Championship before the lights went out to reveal a debuting Satnam Singh. The debut has been the recipient of much criticism among fans and backstage talent alike.

Tony Khan, known for teasing his audience, says that he will be on the April 20th edition of Dynamite with another “massive announcement.”
