AEW President Tony Khan has offered more details about the upcoming Battle of the Belts special taking place on January 8th.
The event will be the first-ever AEW quarterly TNT special, and will take place at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, NC. The name is a throwback to a show of the same name hosted by the NWA and the CWF (Championship Wrestling from Florida).
Appearing on the Culture State podcast, Tony Khan has confirmed that the special will be an hour long. However, he also admitted that this means that not all of the company’s championships will be on the line.
“It’s a one hour show. It’s a one hour event, so I can’t put every belt on the line. It’s a great chance on a Saturday night to expand the reach of AEW by giving the fans great championship matches on a Saturday night, which is a night people love watching wrestling, especially for a big event. There is going to be big championship matches. I’m very excited about it,”
To date only one match has been confirmed for the special with AEW Women’s Champion Britt Baker defending her title against Riho.
Back in September it was confirmed that AEW Dynamite will be moving from TNT to TBS from January 5th. In addition to the move, it was announced that AEW will host four Saturday ‘supercard specials’ each year. While Dynamite is moving to a new home, Rampage will continue to air on TNT in its current Friday night slot.
As part of the new deal, AEW unveiled a new championship on the October 6th episode of Dynamite.
With the help of Aubrey Edwards, Tony Schiavone unveiled the new TBS Championship which will act as a second title in the AEW women’s division. It was then revealed that the first-ever champion will be crowned via a tournament. The finals of the tournament will take place on January 5th.
The two semi-finals are set to be fought out between Thunder Rosa and Jade Cargill, and Nyla Rose and Ruby Soho.
