Tony Khan discussed the potential addition of new championships to the AEW roster.
In a post-show media scrum following AEW Double or Nothing, acknowledging the interest expressed by fans and wrestlers over the years, Tony Khan addressed the possibility of introducing women’s tag team titles, a concept that has garnered increased attention as AEW continues to bolster its women’s division with notable signings such as Deonna Purrazzo and Mercedes Mone.
During the post-show media scrum, Khan revealed that discussions have taken place regarding the addition of new championships to AEW. He emphasised the emergence of strong rivalries within the promotion and the ongoing efforts to restore the women’s division to its strongest state.
We’ve talked a lot about potential additions in terms of championships. Right now, we have strong rivalries emerging. We’re still trying to build the depth back to the strongest it’s ever been.
Reflecting on the depth of the division during All Out 2021, he highlighted the participation of 21 women in the Casino Battle Royale and a compelling championship match between Britt Baker and Kris Statlander, underlining it as the deepest the division has been to date.
There was a point, All Out 2021, where I was coaching the Casino Battle Royal and we had 21 women in that battle royale and a great Britt Baker vs. Kris Statlander championship match. That was, top to bottom, up until now, the deepest the division has ever been.
Despite setbacks due to injuries, Khan expressed a commitment to enhancing the division’s depth and fortifying its strength.
A lot of great people in that match have been out or injured. We’re going to keep getting depth back and getting the division stronger.
Notably, Tony Khan also expressed interest in introducing mixed tag team championships, a unique concept that diverges from offerings in other major promotions. He emphasised the potential appeal of mixed tag team championships and their capacity to distinguish AEW within the wrestling landscape.
Those are interesting championships, I also think something different we could do here, that I have interest in, would be mixed tag team championships. I think a lot of people would be interested in that too. That’s different than what other major promotions have, and I think it would set AEW apart. I’m interested in mixed tag team championships.
