Tony Khan has confirmed that IWGP United States Champion Jon Moxley will not be appearing at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 15 next month.
Speaking during a media call to promote AEW Dynamite Winter Is Coming, Khan was asked by Mike Beauvais of TSN if Moxley would appear at New Japan’s annual Tokyo Dome event on January 4th and 5th next year amidst speculation.
Khan’s response was quick and simple: “No” – putting to bed any rumours that Moxley would defend his IWGP United States Championship at the event. Khan’s confirmation can be heard below at 32:20, alongside his response on if there’s an AEW Trios Championship in the works!
Both of Jon Moxley’s IWGP United States Championship reigns have been turbulent, to say the least. In his first reign with the belt, he was forced to vacate the title prematurely after being unable to travel to Japan in the aftermath of Typhoon Hagibis. Moxley managed to regain the title by defeating Lance Archer during Night 1 of Wrestle Kingdom 14 and has since defended the belt against Juice Robinson and Minoru Suzuki.
Yet again, however, Moxley is unable to travel to Japan – this time because of travel restrictions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, Moxley is still recognised as IWGP United States Champion and became the longest-reigning champion in the belt’s history earlier this year at 333 days and counting.
Moxley also currently holds the AEW World Championship, which he’s set to defend against Kenny Omega at AEW Dynamite Winter Is Coming on December 2nd. Inside The Ropes will have live coverage of everything that goes down on the show as it happens!
