Tony Khan has discussed FTR’s current in-ring hiatus and their plans for the future.
Earlier in January Dax Harwood of FTR revealed that he and Cash Wheeler would be taking a break from the ring. The pair are coming off the back of a spectacular 2022 where they held the Ring of Honor, AAA and NJPW Tag World Tag Team Titles simultaneously.
However, this run came at a cost. The duo have featured in a series of hard-hitting matches, most recently being defeated by The Briscoes in a bloody Dog Collar Match at Final Battle. During the bout, Harwood took a super-plex onto a pile of steel chairs and worked the rest of December in significant pain.
While revealing that they would be taking a break, Harwood revealed that FTR’s contracts with AEW expire in April. This sparked speculation that the duo could potentially be heading back to WWE.
Harwood also said that whatever they do next in wrestling, will be the last phase of their careers.
“Right now, at this point in our career, is the most important time in our career. I mean that monetarily, creatively, and personally. It is the most important time in our career. With that being said, we have asked and been granted the next few months off of television so we can sit back, reflect, decide, let out bodies heal, and figure out what we’re going to do for the next few years. Whatever we decide to do next will be the absolute last thing we do as far as wrestling.”
Tony Khan Comments On Status Of FTR
During an appearance on the In The Kliq podcast, AEW boss Tony Khan has reiterated that despite their contract status he wants to see FTR back.
“I do hope to see FTR back,” Khan said. “They do need some time to recover from what was one of the most intense years of wrestling any team’s ever done — the schedule they went through, all the different places they worked.”
“So I think, for those guys, we wanna see them back in AEW and wanna see them heal up and come back at 100 percent,” Khan said. “We’re really looking forward to that, hopefully. I think they’re a great team and would love to have them back.”
FTR last wrestled at Wrestle Kingdom 17 on January 4th when they lost to the NJPW World Tag Team Titles to Bishamon.
