Tony Khan has addressed a recent AEW report that caused concern among fans.
While fans have noticed an increase in the quality of Dynamite and Collision over the past few weeks, there have still been some segments and spots that have become topics of discussion for all the wrong reasons.
On a recent episode of Dynamite, Thunder Rosa stormed to the ring with a steel chair to save Kris Statlander from a post-match beatdown from Penelope Ford and Megan Bayne. Instead of attacking the heels, Rosa did not swing the chair and an awkward stand-off ensued.
With many questioning why the disjointed segment occurred, a follow-up report claimed that one reason was that Tony Khan refused to do production meetings in AEW. It was also noted that many talent in the company are frustrated at the lack of the meetings and has become a common complaint.
During the media call ahead of AEW Revolution, Khan was asked about the report. Noting that numerous production meetings take place throughout the day, Khan admitted that he found the discourse to be amusing:
“I meet with everybody involved several times a day in a couple of different groups in a few different working groups. I’ve got all of the commentators. I’ve got the top production people, led by Mike Mansury and his group, and coaches, and I’ll meet with them individually and in groups.
I’ll get the production people and the commentators together. I’ll get with the individual coaches. The coaches will also meet with the production people, and we’ll go over things throughout the day. And like all processes in life, I think we’re constantly looking at this, and when you depend on people, there’s got to be good communication between people.”
So I’ll generally come in with an outline for what I’m looking for. We know who our top stars, our top rivalries are, where we’re going. We know big matches, big moments. I’ve got a lot of ideas, and I’ll get with a group of coaches, a group of producers and production people and the announcers, and then we’ll all come together.
It’s possible that I’ll meet with several of the groups as individual groups, and then they’ll meet with each other, and then I’ll get with them, generally one on one. Then I’ll get before showtime, all the announcers and production people together and it’s something I think has worked for us, and we put on really, really good television, and I believe have had the most consistent shows week in, week out. So that’s kind of where we’re going.”
Khan also brought up the reports, noting that some of the things he read were “completely untrue”, but understands that it is part of the industry and part of sports, adding that he found the discourse amusing:
“So I found some of that discourse to be amusing. Especially in the midst of the great quality, but I guess consider the source.”
