MJF has enjoyed something of a rollercoaster relationship with AEW boss Tony Khan since joining the company in 2019.
The current AEW World Champion delights in pushing the envelope of his character, and his outspoken nature has delighted fans and frustrated management at different periods. In the lead-up to Double or Nothing 2022, MJF missed a signing event before begging Khan to fire him on the post-Double or Nothing episode of Dynamite. He has also repeatedly courted WWE on AEW television.
While much of this is MJF pushing his realistic character, many of these moments were rooted in genuine issues backstage.
On the most recent episode of Dynamite, MJF took his latest step toward evil by claiming that he once crashed his car and put his incapacitated passenger in the driver’s seat in an effort to avoid being arrested.
Speaking on K&C Masterpiece, Tony Khan commented on his World Champion and what it’s like to work with him. Khan said that MJF is a “challenging personality” but a “great professional wrestler.”
“He’s one of the most dislikable people there is. He elicits that emotion for a lot of people. He’s a very challenging personality and very hard to work with, but he’s a great professional wrestler. We saw it last week, that incredible match to kick off Championship Fight Night on Dynamite.
MJF is a great wrestler, he showed it out there one-on-one against (Konosuke) Takeshita. It’ll be the ultimate test for a champion, for a pro wrestler, on March 5 at Revolution, in the main event, a 60-minute Iron Man match when MJF goes one-on-one with the greatest technical wrestler in the world, maybe the greatest technical wrestler of all time, ‘The American Dragon’ Bryan Danielson.
MJF, if you don’t like him, get ready to see him get put through the ultimate test of punishment. We’ll see what kind of wrestler and champion he is. Knowing, as a fan, you’re going to see Bryan Danielson wrestle for 60 minutes, what a treat,”
Tony Khan Claims WWE Are At War With WWE
Speaking in a recent interview he claimed that AEW is at war with WWE while alleging that the sports entertainment giant has been trying to tamper with his star’s contracts. Khan labeled the allegations as “disturbing” while explaining that multiple members of staff have claimed WWE contacted them.
The AEW President added that despite these issues, the quality of AEW’s programming hasn’t suffered.
