The AEW World Championship has declared vacant by AEW President Tony Khan.
Just three days after becoming AEW World Champion CM Punk has been forced to relinquish his prized championship.
Almost from the moment that the referee’s hand hit the canvas to mark the three count which confirmed Punk as World Champion, chaos began to surround the star. At first, this chaos went very much to plan. A returning MJF confronted the new champion after revealing that he was the mystery man who had won the Casino Ladder Match earlier in the night.
This win meant that MJF has booked himself a shot at the championship. So far so good.
However, as soon as Punk sat down in the post-show media scrum the script went well and truly out of the window. Punk unleashed a verbal assault on the Young Bucks, Adam Page and Kenny Omega which left the wrestling world stunned. Upon leaving, Punk was confronted the Bucks and Omega which sparked a brawl which saw punches and a chair thrown, while Omega ended up getting bitten, it is believed by Ace Steel.
On Dynamite, with Punk at home in Chicago, Tony Khan addressed fans in a video package to the sound of boos from the crowd. The AEW President announced that both the AEW World Championship and the Trios Championship are vacant.
A new AEW World Champion will be crowned at AEW Grand Slam following a ‘Tournament of Champions.’ The tournament will see Hangman Adam Page face Bryan Danielson, and Sammy Guevara meet Darby Allin for the right to face Jon Moxley in the semi-final. The winner of Danielson vs. Page will meet Chris Jericho.
New AEW World Trios Champions will be crowned on the September 7th edition of Dynamite in a match between Death Triangle and Orange Cassidy and the Best Friends.
