While there are a number of pro wrestlers who are at their peak right now, and pushing the boundaries of the profession, fans are always looking for what’s next. Whether that’s a new star to burst onto the scene, or a current name to breakthrough to main event level. Interestingly, Tony Khan believes he already has that man.
2022 has been a turbulent year for All Elite Wrestling with reports of backstage unrest, and the very public falling out between CM Punk and a number of top names. The brawl following the All Out media scrum in September involving Punk and The Elite marked a new nadir for the company. However, with Full Gear now in the rear-view mirror and three new champions crowned, the company are viewing 2023 as something of a new start.
Tony Khan Tips Wardlow To Be The Future
One of those title changes at Full Gear saw Wardlow lose the TNT Championship to Samoa Joe in a ‘battle of the big men’ also involving Powerhouse Hobbs. Despite this, AEW President Tony Khan believes that big things could be in Mr Mayhem’s future.
Appearing on the AEW Unrestricted podcast with Tony Schiavone and Aubrey Edwards ahead of the show, Khan said that Wardlow could well be the future of professional wrestling.
“I believe Wardlow probably, in many ways, has a good a chance to be the future of pro wrestling as anybody,” Khan said. “He’s someone we really see as a star for the future here, and is a homegrown star.”
Wardlow has enjoyed the best year of his career in 2022, enjoying incredible popularity with the AEW faithful, as well as picking up a huge win over MJF at Double or Nothing. Although this was somewhat overshadowed by the Salt of the Earth’s subsequent ‘pipe-bomb’ promo just days later, Wardlow went on to win the TNT Championship. After successful defences against the likes of Orange Cassidy, Jay Lethal and Matt Taven he finally came undone against his former tag team partner on November 19th.
