Despite being a featured act on AEW since her arrival, Toni Storm nearly quit wrestling altogether after making the decision to leave WWE.
On December 29th, 2021, it was reported that Toni Storm was shockingly gone from WWE despite being featured in a program with then-champion Charlotte Flair. A later report revealed that she had quit the company and flown herself home on her own dime.
The Mae Young Classic Tournament winner has spoken in the past about being overwhelmed by WWE’s schedule, and said that while she has no ill will toward the company, the role wasn’t for her.
Now, speaking on the AEW Unrestricted podcast, Toni Storm discussed just how severe her burnout was, and revealed that she nearly quit the wrestling business altogether.
“There was moments like at first definitely like ‘oh this is shockingly terrible I’m going to leave forever, this is me done.’ Like it didn’t last long, I quit, left, sat on it for a while, you know you get that wrestling itch. I really thought I was dead, I remember I was done.”
However, upon further reflection, Toni Storm admits that she’s likely to be in the wrestling business in some capacity for the rest of her life.
“I’m never done, I’m one of those I’m a lifer I’ll probably be around until I’m old as hell and probably have kids that wrestle, I’m here for life. What else am I going to do? I don’t have any other qualifications, I don’t like anything else, I never showed an interest in anything whatsoever and didn’t go to school so… yeah.”
The star also discussed the SmackDown angle with Charlotte Flair that involved a heavy amount of cream pie being thrown.
Toni Storm signed with WWE in the summer of 2018, having previously competed in the inaugural Mae Young Classic the year prior. She was initially part of the NXT UK brand before joining the NXT roster in October 2020. The New Zealander challenged for the NXT Women’s Championship on numerous occasions, all in unsuccessful fashion.
Following her exit from WWE, Storm signed with All Elite Wrestling, debuting on the March 30th episode of Dynamite. She defeated The Bunny in a qualifier for the women’s Owen Hart Cup, and she advanced to the semifinals when she defeated Jamie Hayter.
