Tommaso Ciampa & Pete Dunne Work SmackDown Dark Match Amidst Call Up Speculation

Two NXT Superstars could be seen by the live crowd ahead of the SmackDown show on Friday night, as Tommaso Ciampa took on Pete Dunne.

In September NXT was reborn into NXT 2.0 and has since seen a whole new generation of stars begin to make their name for themselves on the developmental brand. This has meant many stars of the black and gold era of the show have moved on, either to the main roster or leaving WWE altogether.

Adam Cole, Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly, and Johnny Gargano all held gold during their time on NXT and have all since left the company. The first three stars have reunited in AEW with their new collective name apparently being trademarked by the company.

Behind the scenes, there has been great upheaval in recent days on NXT as stalwarts of the brand such as William Regal, Road Dogg, and Samoa Joe have all been released from their WWE contracts.

At NXT New Year’s Evil, Bron Breakker symbolically smashed a gold ‘X’ signifying the final farewell to the black and gold brand before he unseated Tommaso Ciampa as NXT Champion.

Now as two members of the old guard NXT roster, Ciampa and Pete Dunne faced each other in the dark match before SmackDown took place on Friday night according to PWInsider. WIth NXT seemingly moving on from Ciampa and Dunne’s generation, the match could signal that the two stars could be set for a call up to the main roster.

Tommaso Ciampa had a brief run on the WWE main roster back in the spring of 2019 when he, Gargano, Ricochet, and Aleister Black all graduated to Raw and SmackDown. Ciampa’s time on the main roster on that occasion was short as just weeks later he had to undergo neck surgery.
